Getting our children to speak English well is not only a bilingual family’s goal but is also something that is attainable for families who are monolingual and from Almeria. It only requires intention, imagination and a good plan.
We are aware of the importance of languages but the word “bilingual” is already so over-used and manipulated. However, we ALL agree on one thing: knowing English provides us with an undeniable advantage in life.
Not only that, but an advanced knowledge of languages in children results in an improvement in creativity, flexibility, concentration and perhaps … a little more understanding of how the world works. In addition, all of this is reflected not only in academic performance but also in skills that allow us to enjoy life fully, offering us many more experiences and opportunities.
When to start?
Early! Children in their first months of life begin to work on acquiring their own language, which makes it the stage where they most easily absorb other languages too. That is why it is important to use this stage of childhood to the full, especially between 2 and 7 years old when the acquisition of language is so natural for them. Doing it after this point does not mean they have missed the chance, but they are changing the mechanisms of learning. Adults have opportunities to learn other languages too!
How?
There are many options and all of these will help in some way. Here are a few suggestions:
At home. If you speak a little English you can choose an hour of the day to practise (dinner, a game, etc.). Do not worry if your level of English is not very high, remember that the language of children is simple and doesn’t require sophisticated structures. Another form of positive interaction with the child through English could be by reading simple books or even utilising audio-visual media. TV, in my opinion, should always be watched in the original version!
Schools. Find an educational center in Almería that will support you in this way. The school, in combination with centers like Anglophone, should be your allies to bring you not only the content, but also the skills needed to achieve this goal.
How do I choose my English language center? Check that the staff are qualified, native, and create a positive learning environment that will motivate and inspire their students. Also, that they have a clear methodology and ensure small class groups that allow communication skills, especially oral skills, to flourish.
There are many other options available to help them along the way. If you have a room available and want to share your home, having an au pair for a while is also a great way to complement their experience. Almeria is a very attractive place that will appeal to many young people! There are many websites that can help you with the selection of an au pair, and we recommend that you do several interviews to select the person who will most connect with your family.

¿CÓMO CONSEGUIR QUE MI HIJO TENGA UN BUEN NIVEL DE INGLÉS?
Que nuestros hijos puedan desenvolverse perfectamente en inglés no es un objetivo que pertenece sólo a familias bilingües sino que es perfectamente alcanzable para familias almerienses y monolingües. Sólo requiere intención, imaginación y un buen plan.
Es verdad que no paramos de oír la importancia de los idiomas y la palabra bilingüe está ya tan manoseada que hasta nos causa rechazo, pero TODOS estamos de acuerdo en una cosa: saber inglés proporciona una innegable ventaja en la vida.
No sólo eso, un conocimiento avanzado de idiomas en niños resulta en una mejora en la creatividad, flexibilidad, concentración, poder ejecutivo y quizás… un poco más de entendimiento de cómo funciona el mundo. Además, todo esto no sólo se refleja en el rendimiento académico sino también en habilidades que nos permiten un disfrute pleno de la vida, ofreciéndonos muchas más experiencias y oportunidades.
¿Cuándo empezar?
Desde los primeros meses. Los niños a partir de sus primeros meses de vida empiezan a trabajar en la adquisición de su propio lenguaje, así que de alguna manera es la etapa en la que más fácilmente absorben cualquier otro. Por eso es importante exprimir a tope la etapa infantil, especialmente entre el periodo de 2 a 7 años donde la adquisición del lenguaje es tan natural para ellos. Eso no significa que después de eso hayan perdido el tren, sino que van cambiando los mecanismos de aprendizaje. ¡Los adultos tenemos oportunidad para aprender otros idiomas también!
¿Cómo?
Hay muchas opciones y todas cuentan y suman. Aquí van algunas:
En casa. Si habláis un poquito de inglés podéis elegir una hora del día para hacerlo (la cena, un juego, etc.), y no os preocupes si vuestro nivel de inglés no es el adecuado, recordad que el lenguaje de los niños es sencillo, no requiere estructuras sofisticadas. Otra forma de interacción positiva con el niño a través del inglés puede ser con libros de lectura sencillos que leer y observar o los medios audiovisuales que consumimos; la tele en mi opinión siempre se debe ver en versión original.
Centros educativos. Busca en Almería un centro educativo que te apoye en este camino. El colegio, en combinación con centros como Anglophone, deben ser tus aliados para aportarle no sólo los contenidos sino también las habilidades necesarias para conseguir el objetivo.
¿Cómo elijo mi centro de inglés? Comprueba que el personal sea cualificado, nativo, que tengan un ambiente positivo de aprendizaje, que motiven e inspiren y proporcionen transparencia en su metodología…y con grupos reducidos que permitan el trabajo de las habilidades comunicativas, especialmente la oral.
Hay muchas otras opciones en el camino. Si tenéis una habitación disponible y ganas de compartir vuestra casa, tener una au pair un tiempo es también una forma genial de complementar experiencias. ¡Almería es un sitio muy atractivo que atrae a muchos jóvenes muy preparados! Hay muchas páginas web que asesoran la selección de un au pair, y recomendamos que hagáis varias entrevistas para seleccionar la persona que más va a conectar con vuestra familia.
